In their own words
Norzarina Razali
Ipoh, Perak
I came in knowing very little about how divorce works under civil law. Zuraidah listened to everything first before explaining anything. I walked out with a written document that I could actually read at home — and understand. That alone was worth more than I expected from one session.

The mediation process was handled carefully. I had expected it to feel adversarial — it did not. Faridah prepared me well for what to expect, and the session itself was structured in a way that kept things calm. We reached an agreement in two sessions rather than going to court.

My situation involves custody arrangements across two households with different circumstances each year. Having someone I can contact when things shift — without starting over with a new lawyer — has been genuinely useful. The retainer arrangement makes that possible at a cost I find reasonable.

I was not sure I needed a lawyer — I thought perhaps I could handle things informally. The initial consultation helped me understand where the risks were. It was honest and direct without being alarmist. I left with a clearer picture and eventually used the settlement service. It resolved well.

What I remember most is that nobody made me feel I was being rushed. My matter dragged over several months because I needed time to think. At no point did I feel pressure to move faster than I was ready for. That made a meaningful difference to how I experienced the whole process.

My case involved both civil and Syariah dimensions. I had been told by another firm that I would need separate representation for each. Berkat Advisory handled both within the same engagement — which saved considerable time and cost, and meant the advice was consistent throughout.

Case Studies
How engagements have unfolded
These accounts describe situations and processes, not personal details. Names and identifying information have been omitted.
Case Study One
Uncontested divorce with property and custody questions
Challenge
A couple wished to separate on agreed terms but were uncertain how to handle a jointly-owned property and two school-age children. Both parties were civil, but neither had legal advice and did not know whether their informal agreement would hold up.
Process
Separate initial consultations were held with each party. Once both understood their positions independently, a joint mediation session was arranged. Terms for property and custody access were discussed openly and a written agreement was drafted over two weeks.
Outcome
Agreement was formalised without contested court proceedings. The process took approximately ten weeks from first consultation to signed agreement. Both parties reported that the children were not significantly disrupted by the process.
"We were bracing for something much harder than this turned out to be."
Case Study Two
Blended family with evolving custody and Syariah considerations
Challenge
A client with children from two marriages — one civil, one under Syariah — needed ongoing advice as circumstances changed: a relocation request by one former spouse, changes to school enrolment, and an inheritance matter affecting maintenance calculations.
Process
A stewardship retainer was established. Annual reviews were held to assess whether existing orders required variation. Three separate document drafts were prepared over the retainer year, and one formal variation application was managed through the Syariah court.
Outcome
All matters were handled within the retainer without the need for additional engagement fees. The relocation request was addressed through negotiated terms rather than contested application. The retainer has now been renewed for a second year.
"Having the same person who knows the full background has made this manageable."
